Whether to thin or not and if so, when, how often and how strongly, are key questions for managing spruce forests. Because thinning strongly influences forest stand development, thinning interventions can have significant effects on overall stand-level productivity as well as the ability to withstand wind and heavy snow loads. In this WP, new thinning models are being developed to provide a better foundation for drawing conclusions on how different thinning interventions affect the growth and stability of individual trees.
