Entre as amea\u00e7as mais preocupantes que afectam os ecossistemas florestais globais encontra-se o nem\u00e1todo do pinheiro (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus<\/em> (Steiner e Buhrer) Nickle), o agente causal da doen\u00e7a da murchid\u00e3o do pinheiro. Na Europa, a gest\u00e3o eficaz desta praga exige estrat\u00e9gias regulamentares e de monitoriza\u00e7\u00e3o abrangentes, incluindo a recolha anual de milhares de amostras de madeira de \u00e1rvores sintom\u00e1ticas e das suas imedia\u00e7\u00f5es, a inspe\u00e7\u00e3o de materiais de embalagem de madeira, como paletes, e a captura do inseto vetor, Monochamus <\/em>spp. Os insectos e as amostras de madeira s\u00e3o enviados para laborat\u00f3rios oficiais, onde estas \u00faltimas s\u00e3o, por vezes, incubadas a 25 \u00b0C durante 15 dias, com o objetivo de maximizar a probabilidade de dete\u00e7\u00e3o do nem\u00e1todo. O presente estudo pretende elucidar sobre o efeito do processo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o da madeira na dete\u00e7\u00e3o de B. xylophilus<\/em>, atrav\u00e9s da an\u00e1lise de amostras de madeira de paletes e de madeira verde obtida de povoamentos de pinheiro, ambas albergando nem\u00e1todos em fase adulta e juvenil. Adicionalmente, a investiga\u00e7\u00e3o procurou avaliar de que forma a presen\u00e7a de fungos, que servem de fonte de alimento aos nem\u00e1todos, permite a persist\u00eancia de B. xylophilus<\/em> em madeira de paletes tratada e colonizada por estes fungos. Os resultados indicam que o per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio para a dete\u00e7\u00e3o de B. xylophilus<\/em> em paletes, exceto quando a madeira est\u00e1 fortemente colonizada por fungos que proporcionam uma nutri\u00e7\u00e3o adequada aos nem\u00e1todos, embora se espere que tais ocorr\u00eancias sejam raras. Para al\u00e9m disso, este estudo n\u00e3o encontrou diferen\u00e7as significativas no crescimento populacional entre as duas fases do ciclo de vida do nem\u00e1todo. Este facto sugere que os juvenis de segunda fase presentes nas amostras de madeira, apesar de n\u00e3o sofrerem diferencia\u00e7\u00e3o sexual, n\u00e3o impedem a capacidade reprodutiva de B. xylophilus<\/em>. O risco de uma potencial infesta\u00e7\u00e3o em madeira de paletes tratada \u00e9 improv\u00e1vel se o tratamento tiver sido efectuado corretamente, e a incuba\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o contribui para aumentar a probabilidade de dete\u00e7\u00e3o do nem\u00e1todo do pinheiro. No entanto, para amostras obtidas de \u00e1rvores, o per\u00edodo de incuba\u00e7\u00e3o aumenta significativamente a dete\u00e7\u00e3o do nem\u00e1todo.
