SUMMARY:FOREST FIRES: How to deal with them?
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS EVENT \n\n\n\nLast year Spain closed its worst year ever for forest fires. According to official figures\, 4 out of every 10 hectares burnt in the EU were on Spanish soil\, with all that this entails seriously affecting many aspects of our lives and environment. Southern Europe in particular is suffering more and more fires with virulent and less controllable characteristics. \n\n\n\nIn the course “Forest Fires: How to face them”\, organised by the Union of Forest Foresters of Southern Europe and Basoa Fundazioa within the framework of the summer courses of the UPV-EHU (Public University of the Basque Country)\, we will analyse different areas of knowledge of fire and we will go deeper into its impact and how to face them.     \n\n\n\nThis event is aimed at the general public\, university students\, non-university students\, teachers\, professionals\, forest owners and environmental groups.  \n\n\n\nThe meeting can be followed in person or online. It will be in Spanish but there will be simultaneous translation into English and French. \n\n\n\nAttached is a brochure with all the information about the course that will take place on 10 and 11 July at the Miramar Palace in San Sebastian. \n\n\n\nRegistration: click here

SUMMARY:Conference on AI and Ecosystem Services
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS \nEcosystem management under changing conditions needs new tools to insight and forecast forest dynamic and management. Artificial intelligence is a game changer in forest management. Artificial intelligence (AI) encompasses a wide range of techniques and frameworks dating back to the mid twenty century. The use of AI in forestry is relatively new\, especially when compared to the early adoption of AI in other fields. The irruption of AI spins researchers and practitioners to unfold the analysis of complex big data. Narrow AI\, defined as an AI system that is specified to perform a limited task\, is commonly applied in biometry (e.g.\, analysis of forest structure with 3D point cloud data) but no so common in other ecosystem management domains. Currently\, adequate AI algorithms can be efficiently prototyped due to plenty of publicly available databases\, open-source libraries and the accessibility to computing platforms. \nThis scientific meeting will be held the week of April 17-21\, 2023 in Palencia (Spain) to address Artificial Intelligence in the field of Ecosystem Management in its broadest definition and to foster analysis and debate. \nMore information

SUMMARY:FAO - 8th World Forest Week- Growing a better planet
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS \nThe 8th World Forest Week (WFW2022) will feature a series of inspiring events bringing FAO Member States\, a range of partner organizations\, leaders\, science and youth to discuss a broad range of topics at the margins of the 26th Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO26). \nAs in previous years\, the World Forest Week will provide participants and partner organizations with a unique opportunity to exchange\, connect\, showcase best practices and actions on the ground\, and to contribute from the forest community to the global international debate on forestry and environmental issues. Events organized during the World Forest Week will be virtual and hybrid\, organized/co-sponsored by Members\, partner organizations (including the Collaborative Partnership on Forests) and FAO. \nWFW2022 is structured around the priority areas outlined in the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031 with its vision of a sustainable and food secure world for all\, in the context of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. FAO seeks transformation to more efficient\, inclusive\, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production\, better nutrition\, a better environment\, and a better life\, leaving no one behind. \nSide event: “Planting forests for carbon neutral economies\, sustainable landscapes and livelihoods”  –  Wednesday 5 October from 08:15 to 09:45am in the Red room \nPlease find attached the programme of the event. \nThis side-event aims at sharing experiences and current trends in planted forests and at discussing the challenges\, opportunities and best practices to enable their expansion as an essential nature-based solution to accelerate the transition towards a carbon-neutral economy\, sustainable landscapes and livelihoods opportunities. The event will bring together perspectives from governments\, science\, civil society\, industry and FAO Commissions. \nAlignment with 4 Betters \nThe side-event fits best under Better Environment: Planted forests are a known option for restoration of degraded landscapes. Through the provision of wood products and income generation\, community forests and woodlots can reduce pressure on forest reserves and other protected areas. Planted forests recently gained recognition for the multiple ecosystem services they can provide: erosion control\, soil fallow\, carbon sequestration\, and freshwater flow protection\, among others. \nHowever\, it is relevant to all the other Betters: \n\nBetter Production: Planted forests\, including plantations are widely used throughout the world for the production of biomass for timber\, bioenergy and other forest products.\nBetter Nutrition: Planted forests are an important source of bioenergy supply\, with in particular fuelwood and charcoal for cooking in many countries throughout the world\, and are an essential link of the food system.\nBetter Life: Planted forests are part of large\, globalized value chains as much as they are a source of livelihoods for smallholders and family farmers. They will be instrumental to fulfill the needs in wood products of a growing global population\n\n  \nChristophe Orazio\, Director\, European Institute of Planted Forest (IEFC) and Lead of the IUFRO Taskforce “Resilient Planted Forests Serving Society & Bioeconomy” will be one of the speakers\, for the panel discussion. \nMore information

SUMMARY:{:gb}NGP|IUFRO Forest Plantations in Resilient Landscapes Study Tour{:}{:fr}NGP|IUFRO - Plantations forestières dans des paysages résilients{:}
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS \nDouglas fir plantations are part of the Limousin’s territorial mosaic\, whose landscape is mainly made up of meadows and forests: oak\, chestnut and Douglas fir. The plantations were established at the end of the Second World War in a context of abandonment of agricultural land and lack of wood. We are now in the phase of harvesting and reconstitution of these stands that are reaching maturity. \nThis study tour will go across the Limousin’s territorial mosaic landscape to explore how plantations can be integrated into resilient landscapes. You will have the opportunity to get a deep overview into the concept of New Generation Plantations and to get to know different case studies from other parts of the world. \nThe Pôle de Lanaud building\, created to promote the Limousine cattle breed and built with the local Douglas fir timber will serve as the perfect scenario to discuss with the landscape stakeholders the actual challenges that the plantations sector is facing to make a positive impact into the mosaic landscape. \nThis event will be translated to French and English. \nJoin us in Limoges\, France! \nRegister
