SUMMARY:Pre-Conference meeting - Unlocking finance for sustainable and inclusive wood value chains
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking finance for sustainable and inclusive wood value chains \n\n\n\nA dialogue toward collaboration on innovative financing opportunities and mechanisms to promote sustainable wood production and consumption in East Africa\, including smallholder forest and farm producer organizations \n\n\n\n\n6 November 2023   \n\n\n\n(CIFOR-ICRAF\, Nairobi\, Kenya)   \n\n\n\nAn event to be organized by FAO and the Forest and Farm Facility together with the Government of Kenya\, and with the technical collaboration of the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)\, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS)\, The Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI)\, the Swedish Embassy of Kenya\, and Gatsby Africa Foundation.   \n\n\n\nBackground \n\n\n\nThe East Africa region presents enormous opportunities to promote sustainable production and consumption of wood products. On the production side\, for example\, the Kenya Government has committed to plant 15 billion trees to achieve 30% of tree cover by 2032 (at an estimated cost of Sh600 billion\, about USD 4.5 billion). On the processing side\, improvements in sustainability and efficiency are being sought in the region\, and especially in Uganda\, where planted forests could potentially play an important role in the development of a regional forest sector. On the end market side\, various initiatives are underway to promote the use of wood-based products instead of more carbon intensive materials in sectors such as building and construction. The coordinated support to various segments of wood value chains\, from wood production to processing to the development of markets for sustainable wood can have significant positive effects on the environment\, biodiversity and development. \n\n\n\nYet\, scaling up such value chains requires further investments\, both public and private. Several obstacles prevent larger investments to reach forest value chains in general\, and small forest and farm producers and SMEs in particular: the perception of forestry as a high-risk business\, informal and fragmented value chains\, unattractive investment conditions (e.g.\, weak governance\, inadequate infrastructure\, high transaction costs\, lack of financial literacy in the sector)\, and limited capacity by SMEs and local market participants to attract and access finance (lack of bankable projects). \n\n\n\nTo address these challenges\, FAO and the Forest and Farm Facility (FFF) are organizing with CIFOR-ICRAF\, the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) the event “Unlocking finance for sustainable and inclusive wood value chains: A dialogue toward collaboration on innovative financing opportunities and mechanisms to promote sustainable wood production and consumption in East Africa\, including smallholder forest and farm producer organizations.” \n\n\n\nObjectives of the event \n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitate exchange and dialogue among key players engaged in improving different segments of wood value chains in East Africa\n\n\n\nTake stock of recent developments related to promotion of sustainable wood value chains\n\n\n\nShare examples\, lessons\, good practices and opportunities to increase finance for players that want to contribute to more sustainable wood production and consumption.\n\n\n\nDiscuss promising opportunities and scenarios to mobilize finance for wood value chains\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nExpected outputs \n\n\n\nStrategic elements and concrete activities identified and agreed to scale up results\, accelerate the mobilization and sustainability of financing opportunities to promote sustainable wood production and consumption in East Africa. \n\n\n\nLinkages to the International Congress on Planted Forests 2023 \n\n\n\nThe proposed event will complement the ICPF sessions\, in particular: “New business models: investing into wood production\, restoring ecosystem services\, and enhancing livelihoods” which is expected to be organized for 7 November\, the first day of the conference. \n\n\n\nDraft program \n\n\n\nThe day will cover: \n\n\n\n\nGlobal and regional developments related to promotion of sustainable wood value chains\n\n\n\nDeveloping end-markets for sustainable wood – the market for timber in the construction sector\n\n\n\nProcessing wood for value addition\, efficiency\, and as an incentive to expand forest areas\n\n\n\nProducing wood in a sustainable\, responsible and inclusive way\, with special focus on the role of smallholder forest and farm producers\n\n\n\nWorking together for scale up results\, accelerate the mobilization of finance and sustainability– strategic elements and concrete next steps\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\nContacts: \n\n\n\n\nPhilip Kisoyan (Philip.Kisoyan[at]fao.org) \n\n\n\nMartin Binott (binottmartin[at]gmail.com)  \n\n\n\nMarco Boscolo (marco.boscolo[at]fao.org) \n\n\n\nJhony Zapata (Jhony.ZapataAndia[at]fao.org)

SUMMARY:Woodrise event 2023 Bordeaux - Workshop on Forest Resources
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS \n\n\n\n\n\nMost of the world’s forests have already been used by humans. Their sustainable management can be ensured either by natural regeneration or by plantation. Plantation forests have several functions including wood production\, which is essential for many applications: construction\, paper\, heating\, etc. In this workshop\, we will look at some of the types of plantation forests that exist in the world and the possibilities they offer to meet the growing demand for bio-based products used in the construction of wooden buildings. \n\n\n\nProgram \n\n\n\nCall for abstracts – IEFC is offering its members the opportunity to have one of their PhD students speak at the Woodrise 2023 event in Bordeaux. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered thanks to the IEFC Network Fund. \n\n\n\nApply

SUMMARY:FOREST FIRES: How to deal with them?
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS EVENT \n\n\n\nLast year Spain closed its worst year ever for forest fires. According to official figures\, 4 out of every 10 hectares burnt in the EU were on Spanish soil\, with all that this entails seriously affecting many aspects of our lives and environment. Southern Europe in particular is suffering more and more fires with virulent and less controllable characteristics. \n\n\n\nIn the course “Forest Fires: How to face them”\, organised by the Union of Forest Foresters of Southern Europe and Basoa Fundazioa within the framework of the summer courses of the UPV-EHU (Public University of the Basque Country)\, we will analyse different areas of knowledge of fire and we will go deeper into its impact and how to face them.     \n\n\n\nThis event is aimed at the general public\, university students\, non-university students\, teachers\, professionals\, forest owners and environmental groups.  \n\n\n\nThe meeting can be followed in person or online. It will be in Spanish but there will be simultaneous translation into English and French. \n\n\n\nAttached is a brochure with all the information about the course that will take place on 10 and 11 July at the Miramar Palace in San Sebastian. \n\n\n\nRegistration: click here

SUMMARY:Conference on AI and Ecosystem Services
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS \nEcosystem management under changing conditions needs new tools to insight and forecast forest dynamic and management. Artificial intelligence is a game changer in forest management. Artificial intelligence (AI) encompasses a wide range of techniques and frameworks dating back to the mid twenty century. The use of AI in forestry is relatively new\, especially when compared to the early adoption of AI in other fields. The irruption of AI spins researchers and practitioners to unfold the analysis of complex big data. Narrow AI\, defined as an AI system that is specified to perform a limited task\, is commonly applied in biometry (e.g.\, analysis of forest structure with 3D point cloud data) but no so common in other ecosystem management domains. Currently\, adequate AI algorithms can be efficiently prototyped due to plenty of publicly available databases\, open-source libraries and the accessibility to computing platforms. \nThis scientific meeting will be held the week of April 17-21\, 2023 in Palencia (Spain) to address Artificial Intelligence in the field of Ecosystem Management in its broadest definition and to foster analysis and debate. \nMore information

SUMMARY:FAO - 8th World Forest Week- Growing a better planet
DESCRIPTION:PARTNERS \nThe 8th World Forest Week (WFW2022) will feature a series of inspiring events bringing FAO Member States\, a range of partner organizations\, leaders\, science and youth to discuss a broad range of topics at the margins of the 26th Session of the Committee on Forestry (COFO26). \nAs in previous years\, the World Forest Week will provide participants and partner organizations with a unique opportunity to exchange\, connect\, showcase best practices and actions on the ground\, and to contribute from the forest community to the global international debate on forestry and environmental issues. Events organized during the World Forest Week will be virtual and hybrid\, organized/co-sponsored by Members\, partner organizations (including the Collaborative Partnership on Forests) and FAO. \nWFW2022 is structured around the priority areas outlined in the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031 with its vision of a sustainable and food secure world for all\, in the context of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. FAO seeks transformation to more efficient\, inclusive\, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production\, better nutrition\, a better environment\, and a better life\, leaving no one behind. \nSide event: “Planting forests for carbon neutral economies\, sustainable landscapes and livelihoods”  –  Wednesday 5 October from 08:15 to 09:45am in the Red room \nPlease find attached the programme of the event. \nThis side-event aims at sharing experiences and current trends in planted forests and at discussing the challenges\, opportunities and best practices to enable their expansion as an essential nature-based solution to accelerate the transition towards a carbon-neutral economy\, sustainable landscapes and livelihoods opportunities. The event will bring together perspectives from governments\, science\, civil society\, industry and FAO Commissions. \nAlignment with 4 Betters \nThe side-event fits best under Better Environment: Planted forests are a known option for restoration of degraded landscapes. Through the provision of wood products and income generation\, community forests and woodlots can reduce pressure on forest reserves and other protected areas. Planted forests recently gained recognition for the multiple ecosystem services they can provide: erosion control\, soil fallow\, carbon sequestration\, and freshwater flow protection\, among others. \nHowever\, it is relevant to all the other Betters: \n\nBetter Production: Planted forests\, including plantations are widely used throughout the world for the production of biomass for timber\, bioenergy and other forest products.\nBetter Nutrition: Planted forests are an important source of bioenergy supply\, with in particular fuelwood and charcoal for cooking in many countries throughout the world\, and are an essential link of the food system.\nBetter Life: Planted forests are part of large\, globalized value chains as much as they are a source of livelihoods for smallholders and family farmers. They will be instrumental to fulfill the needs in wood products of a growing global population\n\n  \nChristophe Orazio\, Director\, European Institute of Planted Forest (IEFC) and Lead of the IUFRO Taskforce “Resilient Planted Forests Serving Society & Bioeconomy” will be one of the speakers\, for the panel discussion. \nMore information
