Forests cover almost one third of the planet and\nserve as biologically diverse ecosystems for plants, animals and\nmicro-organisms. South West Europe needs healthy and functional forests that\nensure the provision of goods and services to rural and urban society and the\nprotection of its rich biodiversity. Complex forests and mixed plantations, as\na more resilient alternative, can increase, and in many cases improve, the\npotential quality of ecosystem services compared to other forest systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The\nCOMFOR-SUDOE project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organising,\nmanaging and making sense of compartmentalised technical and scientific data\ncan be complex, and opportunities are missed to transfer and share knowledge\nand innovations that could potentially help improve sustainable forest\nmanagement across borders. Scientific studies often fail to reach a broad\npolitical audience. Therefore, coordination of stakeholders, information and\ntechnologies within the SUDOE region is clearly needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why\na transnational forestry consortium has launched the COMFOR-SUDOE project, a\nforest-based strategy, funded by the EU&#8217;s Interreg SUDOE programme, which will\ncontribute to the promotion of ecosystem services and biodiversity protection,\nas well as to ensuring sustainable and resilient management of the forest\nsystem and favourable conditions for a bioeconomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCOMFOR-SUDOE project works to disseminate information on complex forests and\nmixed species plantations in southwestern Europe. It aims to promote complex\nforests (mixed and irregular) and multi-species plantations as a resilient\nadaptation strategy in response to climate change and biodiversity decline. The\nproject aims to strengthen transnational synergies and network partnerships in\nspecific sectors of the SUDOE, promoting research, development and transfer of\ntechnologies and innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A\nconsortium of experts committed to achieving results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nconsortium is composed of a wide range of collaborators with complementary skills\nand expertise from across Europe. They are organised in several interdependent\nand interactive working groups committed to assessing the social and economic\nvalue that ecosystem services provide by mixed and irregular plantations in the\nSUDOE area, to create a common experimental network of mixed and irregular\nforests and plantations in the SUDOE area for knowledge transfer. The\nconsortium also aims to strengthen transnational research and innovation\nsynergies and network partnerships, to develop an intelligent information\nmanagement strategy for mixed and irregular plantations in the area.
