Therefore, one of the objectives of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sust-forest.eu\/en\">SustForest+<\/a>\nproject is to offer a view on the evolution of the international market to\nEuropean stakeholders of the pine oleoresin sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCOVID-19 pandemic had an impact on economies around the world and the resin\nmarket was not exempt. During the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> quarter of 2020, the GDP of\nmost Western countries decreased while the one in China increased by 11.50%.\nWhile the volumes of resin and rosin exported to Europe decreased, exports to\nAsia increased significantly. Between the second quarter of 2020 and the second\nquarter of 2019, rosin exports from Brazil to China almost doubled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nspectacular growth in the context of a health crisis is part of a deeper\nevolution of the Chinese economy. Over the last 20 years, the country has\ncontinuously reduced its production and participation as a global supplier of\nrosin and turpentine made from oleoresin. This decline is linked to the low\nproductivity of the tapping systems used and the rapid increase in wages in\nChina. Nevertheless, China has increased the share of processing of these raw\nmaterials internally, becoming an exporter of higher value-added processed\nproducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,\nBrazil has doubled its oleoresin production in the last 6 years thanks to the\nuse of efficient techniques, genetic selection of pine trees for their resin\nproductivity and the availability of cheap labour. The country has thus become\nthe world\u2019s leading exporter of oleoresin, rosin and turpentine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plantedforests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_3327-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4331\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plantedforests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_3327-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.plantedforests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_3327-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.plantedforests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_3327-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.plantedforests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_3327-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.plantedforests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_3327-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.plantedforests.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/IMG_3327.jpg 1244w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><figcaption>Genetically improved pine forest in Brazil<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe has\nbenefited from a rise in the price of resin over the last decade to increase\nits production, which was almost stopped, mainly in Spain and Portugal. At the\nsame time, tapping activity restarted in France thanks to mechanisation with a\nstrong value in niche markets. Production levels in Europe are still very low\nin comparison with world production and the activity remains subject to\ninternational competition. However, the growing demand for renewable and\nsustainable products from developed countries is likely to favour this market of\nlow-carbon products in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that China\u2019s growing demand for gum rosin and turpentine will not be offset by the growth of this sector in Brazil. Low stocks of rosin worldwide could lead to higher prices. At the same time, paper mill activity has decreased in Europe and the United States, leading to a reduction in the distillation of Tall oil (resin obtained as a by-product in paper production). As a result, the production of Tall oil rosin, a possible substitute for gum rosin, has decreased.
